In the end they made the long run up and pulled three fish off of wing dams. With time of the essence, they locked back through and tried to pick up two more fish at their first spot to no avail.
Coming in they thought they had lost it because they knew the second place team of Tom Hoinacki and Derek Navis were on consistent fish, while Zwick and Kobriger and brought in a kicker each day to bump them up. “It usually takes a limit each day to win it,” said Zwick. “Everything just fell our way.”
Most of their bites came on hair jigs, but their two biggest fish came on Berkley Ripple Shad and 4”Gulp minnows. They are both still in shock that they won, “maybe it will hit us next week,” said Kobriger. The team took home $25,000 in cash, plus sponsor contingencies and big fish awards.
Bringing in the biggest one day weight of the tournament was Rick Walter and Brian Woodward with 20.02lbs today. It bumped them up to second place. Said Woodward, “We had a good year and came to this hoping to have a good time.” While weeds made it hard to fish effectively yesterday, the water was clean today. Their main presentation was PK Spoons. They pitched them and used them vertically. Today was a fun day for the duo, as their first fish was a 20 incher and then they kept going back and forth “one upping” each other. Their three day weight was 36.53lbs.
Tom Hoinacki and Derek Navis spent most of their time in pool 9 jigging, dragging and casting live bait at wing dams and closing dams. Today they brought in two fish for 4.06lbs. The heartbreak came at the end of the day when Navis hooked into a 7lb walleye and they lost it at the net. Their three day weight was 33.34lbs.
For Travor Diegel and Paul Steffen, going with what they knew was the key, as in Minnesota style fishing. They focused on current breaks and pulled number three Colorado blades, six beads and a 2oz bottom bouncer. At other times they would pull just a plain hook with a crawler, and caught 30-40 fish a day. Their three day weight was 29.25lbs.
The 2012 MWC scheduled is expected to be announced tonight. Stay tuned to the message board for more information.
