Fog Delay for MWC

2011-08-26-1761444065.jpgWith minutes to go before the first flight was set to leave this morning, fog rolled in to Sault Ste. Marie,MI, where the MWC is holding the last event of the east division today and tomorrow. After a one hour and 45 minute delay, the fog lifted and teams were able to head out to fish for an $11,250 first place prize.

Many teams are just hoping for the best today. Prefishing has been horrible for Scott Schabel and David VanDriessche. “We have been up here before and the bite has been better. It has been a total struggle during prefishing.  The past few days have been very windy, as in full Detroit River gear in April cold.” Any five fish from the river with bottom bouncers is their first goal. Once they get a limit, they will head to Lake George to try to upgrade.

Prefishing hasn’t been good for Dale Newton and Steve Evert either. They have been here since Monday and finally found their spot at 2pm yesterday afternoon.  “It got a little intense yesterday,” said Newton.  “We’re alright I think. The main thing is getting five fish in the boat. I think we can get five but I don’t know how big they will be.”

Kyle VanSloten  and Craig Wallis are also struggling. “I’ve lived here all my life and fished here all my life and August has never been this tough. August is usually one of our best months,” said VanSloten. Normally the team would be looking for 25lbs, “but I’d take 15 pounds right now and be really happy about it if you told me I could have it. The fish are there, they’ve got to go. They just have lock-jaw. They haven’t gone in four days. I know they are there.”

2011-08-26-552940033.jpgOf course, somebody always has to be on them. The team of Shane Turcotte and David Wagler is one of those teams. “Prefishing was good, we stayed away from a lot of our main spots and tried some new things. We’re confident with what we did prefishing. The walleye love the sun here. When the sun is out the walleye are biting, so we’re looking pretty good,” said Turcotte.

The high will be 75 degrees today with a chance for rain later and storms tonight. Winds are out of the south at 10-15mph.

Due to the fog delay this morning, the weigh-in has been moved back. Teams will now begin returning at 4:45pm EST. Following the weigh-in there will be a kids fishing clinic.
